PENCE’S QUIET POWER PLAY: The Man the GOP “Wrote Off” Is Building the Brain Trust for a Post-Trump Republican Party

And behind the Mar-a-Lago velvet ropes, Melania Trump’s fight to keep Barron out of the frame is back in the headlines.

WASHINGTON. The viral version of this story has a hushed room, a closed-door ceremony, and a former vice president emerging as the new master of the right’s idea factory. The real version is quieter, and in some ways more consequential.

Mike Pence has not taken over the Heritage Foundation. What he has done, over ten months, is slowly assemble the legal, economic and data talent that once powered it. The people leaving Heritage did not stage a coup. They resigned and went somewhere else.

At the same time, a second story has resurfaced, about how Melania Trump has handled her son Barron’s life at the center of one of the most photographed families in the world. The two stories share one question: what does power look like when it is built away from the cameras?

THE “CORONATION” CLAIM: WHAT’S TRUE AND WHAT ISN’T

The viral account says Pence “quietly took control of the right’s most powerful idea factory.” Here is how that holds up.

What the record supports. In late December 2025, more than a dozen staffers left the Heritage Foundation and joined Advancing American Freedom (AAF), founded by Pence, nearly doubling the size of the four-year-old organization. AAF said the hires included leaders from Heritage’s legal, economic and data teams. Heritage president Kevin Roberts himself acknowledged the loss in an all-staff email, saying the departures included most of the staff from Heritage’s legal and economic centers. Heritage Foundation staffers decamp for Pence-founded think tank in latest exodus +2

What it does not support. None of this transferred control of Heritage to Pence. Heritage still exists, still has Roberts as president, and is still publishing. The institution Pence runs is a separate nonprofit, founded in 2021. A hiring spree is not a takeover, and I found no reporting of a closed-door event that “crowned” him anything. reason

The nearest thing to the viral claim is a commentary piece arguing that Pence was now leading Heritage “in all but name.” That is one writer’s opinion, framed around the Heritage board’s decisions, not a factual report of a change in control.

Pence’s real influence comes from a different place. He has become the address for conservatives who left an institution they no longer trusted.

THE EXODUS: HOW HERITAGE CRACKED

The collapse began with a single video. In late October 2025, Tucker Carlson hosted Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist, on his show. Roberts then released a video defending Carlson for the friendly interview, and Fuentes has previously praised Adolf Hitler. Roberts later apologized for his remarks, but the damage spread. NPR

Resignations came almost immediately, even after the apology. Two Heritage board members, Shane McCullar and Abby Spencer Moffat, resigned, with McCullar saying the board was unwilling to confront lapses that harmed its credibility. A task force focused on fighting antisemitism cut ties with the foundation. Heritage Foundation staff exodus continues after Roberts video controversy sparks upheaval +2

Then came the staff. John Malcolm, a Heritage vice president and top legal scholar, was fired after Roberts learned of the plan to move to AAF. Hans von Spakovsky, whom Roberts had tapped to help lead the legal center, resigned alongside the center’s previous leader and also joined AAF. Josh Blackman wrote Roberts that his actions had made continued affiliation untenable. Heritage Foundation undergoes mass staff exodus as cracks open on the New Right +2

Even the legendary Meese legal center moved. One commentator reported that the entire Edwin Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies relocated to Pence’s organization. The center bears the name of Ronald Reagan’s attorney general, and its departure was a symbolic blow as well as a staffing loss. publicnotice

PENCE’S PITCH: “THIS IS WHAT WE STAND FOR”

Pence has framed the departures as a vote on principles, not personalities. He told the Wall Street Journal that the staff were coming to AAF because Heritage and some other voices had embraced big-government populism and tolerated antisemitism. publicnotice

He has been just as pointed about policy. He criticized Heritage for embracing elements of isolationism, including a shift in support from Ukraine’s president toward Vladimir Putin. In an interview, Pence described the response to his organization with a note of surprise. When people reached out around Thanksgiving to join AAF, he said, he assumed it was about what AAF stood for and the appeal of a consistent voice for the conservative movement. AxiosCNN

The growth has been physical as well as institutional. AAF expanded fast enough to need a second floor in its downtown Washington office. In May, it added former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares as a distinguished fellow in its Meese Institute for the Rule of Law. The roster already includes former politicians such as Scott Walker and Newt Gingrich. Mike Pence eyes the future — as kingmaker, not candidate +2

The mission statement, by Pence’s own account, is to promote exactly what the Trump-Pence Administration did every day. That is a pointed claim. It positions AAF as the keeper of the first Trump term’s policy record, in contrast to a second term whose tariffs, foreign policy and personnel Pence has openly criticized. Mother Jones

NOT A CANDIDATE, A KINGMAKER

The most important fact about Pence’s moment is what he says he is not doing. Pence says he will not run for president or any other office in 2028. Instead, he is building what one outlet described as the institutional backbone of a post-Trump Republican Party, whether the party wants it or not. gokhshteinms

That makes him a different kind of political actor than the one who ran a short-lived 2024 presidential campaign. A candidate needs votes. A kingmaker needs credibility, staff and a library of ready-made policy. AAF is assembling all three.

The project also carries a direct challenge. The effort is positioned against the direction Vice President JD Vance is steering the party. Pence has reportedly argued that the party has lost its way on everything from tariffs to abortion to Ukraine. On the Iran war, his position is more nuanced. He said he was proud that Trump ordered strikes against Iran, though he pressed the president to finish the job. Pence Rules Out 2028 Run, Shapes Post-Trump GOP +2

Pence has also been careful to avoid presenting himself as the heir. He emphasized that the Republican Party has a very deep bench and lots of great talent, which reads as a signal that he sees others, not himself, as the future. gokhshtein

THE OTHER SIDE: “LOYALTY IS NON-NEGOTIABLE”

Heritage and its allies have pushed back hard, and their arguments deserve space.

A Heritage spokesperson said at the time that the think tank has always welcomed debate, but alignment on mission and loyalty to the institution are non-negotiable. Another Heritage official accused departing staff of disloyalty, saying the exits would clear the way for a stronger, more focused team. Roberts told staff in his internal email that the manner of the departures spoke volumes. Mike Pence’s think tank lures top Heritage Foundation staffers amid MAGA divide +2

Heritage’s defenders also point to the money. A Heritage official said Roberts’s tenure has been the most profitable in the foundation’s history, with every dollar raised going back into the mission. CNN

And there is the critique from inside the movement. A Heritage ally dismissed AAF, in remarks reported by CNN, as a “retirement home” for people upset that the Republican Party isn’t what they want it to be. The jab captures a real vulnerability. A think tank built on the departed and the disillusioned may struggle to claim the energy of the movement’s base. CNN

Even sympathetic observers have urged caution. One conservative commentator who praised Pence’s principles also noted that Roberts has been loyal and supportive to social conservatives in ways Heritage sometimes was not in the past, and asked that Pence not use social conservatives as props. WHERE HERITAGE STANDS NOW

The institution has not collapsed, whatever the triumphant headlines claimed in December. Heritage remains a major player, and it is still deeply entangled with the administration through Project 2025, the policy blueprint Trump adopted many recommendations from. Axios

A weekly extremism-monitoring digest, which has an advocacy perspective and should be read as such, reported on October 6 that Roberts called the midterm polls a fraud, while his own economists balked at Trump’s promises. That claim comes from a single source and I could not verify it independently. But it fits a broader picture of an organization still working through internal tension weeks before the midterm elections. globalextremism

IS THIS A “SHADOW PRESIDENCY”? A SOBER ASSESSMENT

The viral framing calls Pence’s rise a “shadow presidency in waiting.” The evidence points elsewhere.

Think tanks matter because they supply the ideas, drafts and personnel for the next administration. Heritage’s Project 2025 is the best example, since the document detailed Trump 2.0’s approach to governance. If a party loses faith in its main idea factory, whoever builds the replacement gains real leverage. Mother Jones

But leverage is not control. Several facts cut against the “shadow presidency” idea:

  • Pence has no electoral role. He says he is not running, and his organization cannot hire its way into the nomination.
  • The base is elsewhere. Trump’s coalition rewards loyalty to Trump, and Pence’s break with Trump is exactly what makes AAF attractive to some donors and unattractive to others.
  • Talent is not voters. Policy experts do not move primary electorates. The party’s direction will be decided by candidates and by the outcome of November’s midterms.

The accurate version is more modest and still significant. Pence has positioned a well-staffed institution to be ready if the party turns toward a post-Trump settlement. Whether it does is not something any think tank can decide.

THE OTHER STORY: THE SON NOBODY SEES

While the Washington fight played out, another story kept circulating about a very different kind of power: the power to say no.

Melania Trump has resisted turning her son into a political prop for a decade. Early in the 2016 transition, Barron and Melania remained in New York for six months after the election out of concern about his public image and school. Reporting describes Melania as Barron’s primary parent. More recently, one outlet reported that instead of a dorm room, Melania opted to keep Barron in the family’s Trump Tower residence in Manhattan. Barron is now 20. Barron Trump +2

THE MAR-A-LAGO RULES

The latest wave of attention traces back to an alleged incident. According to a People magazine report relayed by other outlets, guests at Mar-a-Lago were allegedly caught secretly filming Barron during family time on December 26, 2025. yahoo

The reported response was swift. A source said anyone found violating Barron’s privacy would face “banning from the club.” Another claimed guests would be quietly told to stop shooting photos or videos. The phrase attributed to Melania in multiple outlets is that his privacy is non-negotiable. aolwonderwall

A major caution applies here. The original reporting on the confrontation came from a gossip columnist’s Substack, and the quotes rely on anonymous insiders. Outlets such as Yahoo, Wonderwall and AOL repeated the account, so its spread across the internet is not independent confirmation. These rules may be real, exaggerated or invented in part. The White House has not publicly confirmed them in anything I found.

A REAL PRIVACY STORY, WITH REAL SOURCES

One privacy story involving Barron does rest on documents. In early October, the White House released a trove of Biden-era files. According to The Washington Times, federal agents secretly tracked the movements of Melania Trump and her son in the weeks before the FBI’s 2022 raid on Mar-a-Lago. A Trump spokeswoman condemned the surveillance as an abuse of power. washingtontimeswashingtontimes

President Trump responded the next day, saying “they were tracking my wife, my son” and accusing former Attorney General Merrick Garland of weaponizing the Justice Department. Barron was a minor at the time. washingtontimeswashingtontimes

I have not independently reviewed the underlying files, and the account comes from a conservative outlet reporting on documents the White House chose to release. The Justice Department’s side, and the legal basis for any monitoring, are not laid out in what I found. Readers should treat the details as claims that merit further reporting.

THE PARADOX OF THE UNSEEN

The viral text’s central argument is a paradox: the less the public saw of Barron, the more fascinated it became, and that fascination never converted into access.

The evidence for the first half is easy to find. Barron has become a recurring subject of online speculation, from his height to his political leanings. A niece described the experience of the family’s public life with a mild understatement. Kai Trump called being in the spotlight “a little weird.” yahoo

The evidence for the second half is mostly absence. Barron has had few formal interviews and no sustained public role of his own. Whether that reflects his mother’s strategy, his own temperament, or both is not something outside reporting can settle.

The viral piece goes further and declares that “real power may lie in being allowed to remain unseen.” That is an opinion, and a pleasant one, but the facts don’t prove it. A 20-year-old’s privacy is not a form of power. It is a form of protection, and protection is a reasonable thing for a parent to want.

THE LINK BETWEEN THE TWO STORIES

Why combine a think-tank brawl and a family privacy story? The viral version treats both as hidden power moves. A more careful reading finds a shared theme without the mythology.

In both cases, the most influential decisions are made out of public view. Pence’s recruiting happened through phone calls around Thanksgiving, before a single announcement. Melania’s rules, if they exist, are enforced by quiet word and not by statement. And in both cases, the public narrative runs ahead of the documented record.

That gap is where bad information thrives. A hiring wave becomes a “coronation.” A set of gossip-column quotes becomes a settled fact. Readers should be most skeptical exactly when a story feels most cinematic.

WHAT TO WATCH

  • Whether AAF keeps hiring. The organization’s growth is the real measure of Pence’s influence. Watch for new senior hires, donor announcements and policy papers aimed at the 2028 cycle.
  • Heritage’s response. Roberts remains in place. Further departures or a leadership change would reshape the picture quickly.
  • The midterms. A weak Republican showing would intensify the argument over the party’s direction, which is where Pence’s institution hopes to matter.
  • The Biden-era files. More documents may be released, and the Justice Department or the former officials named may respond. That would test claims now resting on a one-sided release.
  • Any official word on Barron. So far, the privacy rules rest on anonymous sourcing. A direct statement from the first lady’s office would change how much weight they deserve.

THE BOTTOM LINE

There was no coronation. Mike Pence did not seize the right’s biggest think tank in a single afternoon, and the evidence does not support a “shadow presidency.” What he did was slower and more durable. He gave a stranded wing of the conservative movement a place to work, and he is betting that wing will matter once Trump leaves the stage.

Barron Trump’s story is similarly less dramatic than the viral version. A mother has reportedly worked to keep her son out of the political machine, and the fascination she faced is real. The sources for the details are thin, and the one documented episode involves the government’s reported monitoring of his family, not a secret strategy.
