“A couple’s shoot. Ben found this photographer he loves, and I thought it would be fun to do something bridal.”
She smiled.
“I’m not buying a dress for 20 pictures.”
That sounded like Hannah.
She was impulsive.
Always had been.
But she wasn’t cruel.
At least, I didn’t think she was.
We weren’t best friends, but we’d always gotten along.
I’d helped her move apartments.
She’d borrowed clothes from me before.
Once, before a job interview, she’d sat on my bathroom counter while I did her hair because she’d decided hers looked “aggressively unemployed.”

She looked away.

I stared at her.

No answer.

“The dress isn’t the problem,” she whispered.
“Then what is?”
Her eyes moved toward the hallway.
Several men were going in and out of a room.
The groom’s room.

“You need to leave before he sees you.”

“Rachel, please.”
I pulled away.
Then I started walking.
“Don’t.”
I kept going.
“I’m serious.”
I reached the door.
Hannah caught up behind me.
“Please don’t do this.”
I pushed it open.
And stopped.
My husband was standing inside.
Lucas.
In a suit.
Holding a champagne glass.
For one ridiculous second, my brain refused to put the pieces together.
That morning, Lucas had kissed me goodbye and said he was spending the day with Ben.
I hadn’t thought anything of it.
Now he was standing beside him.

“Rachel?”
Lucas went white.
Ben looked between us.
Then smiled uncertainly.
“Rachel. Wow.”
I didn’t answer.
“I thought you couldn’t make it.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
Ben glanced at Hannah.
“She said you decided not to come.”
Something inside me went cold.
“Decided?”
Behind me, Hannah said my name.
I looked at Lucas.
“You knew about this?”
“Rachel, I can explain.”
“You knew your sister was getting married today?”
“Yes.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
His expression changed from guilt to confusion.
“She told me you knew.”
Silence.
“I didn’t even know there was a wedding.”
Lucas stared at his sister.
“What?”
Ben stepped forward.
“Wait. Hannah said you couldn’t come because things had been difficult between you two.”
“What things?”
Nobody answered.
Ben looked genuinely confused.
“She said you wanted to give her space.”
I laughed once.
There was nothing funny about it.
“I gave her my wedding dress because she told me she needed it for a photoshoot.”
Ben’s eyes dropped to the dress.
Then back to me.
“Your wedding dress?”
“Yes.”
He turned slowly toward Hannah.
“But you said…”
He stopped.
“What?” I asked.
Ben hesitated.
Then said it.
“She said the dress was your wedding gift to her.”
Even Lucas looked shocked.
“Hannah?”
She folded her arms across her chest.
“I can explain.”
“No,” I said.
“You’ve apparently been explaining me to everyone for months. I’d like to hear their version first.”
Ben sat down.
What followed was somehow stranger than the dress.
According to him, Hannah and I were incredibly close.
Ben and I had only met twice before, both times at crowded family gatherings where we’d barely spoken.
Apparently, that hadn’t stopped Hannah from giving him an entire history for us.
I’d supported their relationship.

Ben rubbed his forehead.

Lucas exhaled.
“A few weeks ago, she said she’d invited you privately.”
“And?”
“She said you declined.”
I stared at him.
“You believed that?”
“She said things had been tense between you.”
“What things?”
“I asked the same thing.”
“And?”
“She said I didn’t notice this stuff.”
That sounded so much like Hannah that I almost hated myself for believing it.
Lucas continued.
“She asked me not to bring the wedding up with you. She said you’d already made your decision and didn’t want me pressuring you.”
“You never thought to ask your wife?”
“I almost did.”
“Almost.”
He looked ashamed.
“She kept telling me not to make it into another family problem.”
There it was.
Lucas had spent his whole life managing Hannah.
Christmas dinner moved because Hannah couldn’t make the original time.
Restaurants changed because Hannah didn’t like the menu.
Arguments ended with Lucas saying the same thing.
“It’s easier this way.”

She stopped.
A woman’s voice came from behind us.
“We only wanted you to learn from Rachel.”
Their mother.
Lucas went still.
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
She seemed to realize she’d said too much.
Hannah laughed bitterly.
“Go ahead, Mom.”
“Hannah.”
“Tell her.”
I looked between them.
“Tell me what?”
Hannah started counting on her fingers.
“Rachel remembers birthdays.”
One.
“Rachel keeps a job.”
Two.
“Rachel knows how to save money.”
Three.
“Rachel doesn’t make everything difficult.”
Her mother interrupted.
“We were trying to help you.”
“By asking why I couldn’t be more like her?”
I looked at Lucas.
“You knew?”
“Some of it.”
“Some?”
Hannah laughed again.
“When you first started dating him, I loved you.”
She looked at me.
“I bought the same coat you had. Remember?”
I did.
“I asked you to do my hair.”
The interview.
I suddenly heard their mother’s voice again.
Rachel’s already rubbing off on you.
“I made that pasta you brought to Mom’s birthday.”
I remembered that too.
“And every time I did something like you, they liked me more.”
Her voice dropped.
“So I kept doing it.”
Nobody spoke.
“Then I couldn’t stand you anymore.”
That hurt.
Not because I blamed her.
Because suddenly I understood things I’d never noticed.
The strange silences.
The little digs.
The way Hannah sometimes asked my advice, then became irritated when I answered.
“Why the dress?” I asked.
Hannah closed her eyes.
Then Ben appeared behind her.
“Hannah.”
She looked at him.
He was holding something.
A garment bag.
“I found this in the bridal suite.”
Hannah’s face collapsed.
I knew before he opened it.
Another wedding dress.
Hers.
“You already had one?”
She nodded.
“Then why did you need mine?”
For several seconds, Hannah couldn’t answer.
Finally, she touched the lace at her waist.
“Because when everyone looked at me today, I wanted to know what it felt like when they looked at you.”
Ben stepped backward.
His expression was devastating.
“Which parts are real?”
Hannah stared at him.
“What?”
“Everything you’ve told me about yourself. Your family. Rachel.”
“Ben, I love you.”
“I know.”
That somehow made it worse.
“I just don’t know why you thought being you wasn’t enough.”
Hannah covered her mouth.
For a moment, she couldn’t answer.
Then she looked down at my dress.
“Because after a while, I didn’t think Hannah was enough either.”
Lucas moved toward her.
Instinctively.
Ready to comfort.
I put my hand out.
“No.”
He stopped.
“This is what you always do.”
“Rachel—”
“She gets upset. You fix it. Everyone else pays for keeping Hannah comfortable.”
“I thought I was protecting her.”
“From what?”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
“From me?”
“No.”
“Then why couldn’t you ask me one question?”
His face fell.
Before he could answer, his mother stepped forward.
“This has gotten completely out of hand. Rachel, can’t you just let her have today?”
I stared at her.
Of course.
Even now.
Give Hannah the dress.
Give Hannah the lie.
Give Hannah whatever kept her from hurting.
Lucas looked at his mother.
Then at me.
“No.”
Everyone went quiet.
His mother frowned.
“What?”
“Rachel’s given enough.”
Hannah disappeared into the bridal suite.
Nobody followed.
Ten minutes later, she returned.
She wasn’t wearing my dress.
She wore the one she’d bought.
Simple.
Soft ivory.
Nothing like mine.
And she looked beautiful.
Not like me.
Like Hannah.
My dress hung over her arm.
She held it out.
“I’ll have it cleaned.”
“You’d better.”
She lowered it again.
Her fingers stayed on the fabric for a second.
“I thought wearing it would make me feel like I finally belonged.”
I looked at her.
“And did it?”
Hannah glanced toward her family.
Then Ben.
“No.”
I left.
Lucas followed me into the parking lot.
“I’m sorry.”
I kept walking.
“Rachel.”
I turned.
“You didn’t lie because you wanted to hurt me.”
He looked relieved too soon.
“You just did what you always do.”
His relief vanished.
“You made it easier for yourself and called it keeping the peace.”
He looked down.
“I need some space.”
He nodded.
For once, he didn’t argue.
Three weeks later, Hannah brought my dress back.
Cleaned.
Pressed.
Inside the same garment bag.
We didn’t hug.
I wasn’t ready.
Neither of us pretended otherwise.
That night, I saw one photograph from the wedding.
Hannah and Ben beneath the flower arch.
She was wearing her own dress.

Under the photograph, Hannah had sent me a private message.
“I should have worn mine from the beginning.”
I didn’t answer.

I carried my dress upstairs and hung it back in the closet.
