On the drive from the airport with Lola, I let my head rest against the window and remembered things I usually pushed away.

I stared at the baby’s soft, dark hair. I couldn’t look at my daughter.

My daughter pressed play on the recorder. Kevin’s voice came out of it, calm the way he always is, telling my teenage daughter exactly what he’d do to me if she opened her mouth.
