She’d watched her kids for free, cooked meals when Melissa worked late, and even emptied part of her retirement savings when Melissa and her husband bought their first house.
I was furious.
I almost said something right there.
Then I remembered the wooden box in Mom’s bedroom.
She’d shown it to me months earlier while we were cleaning out her closet.
Inside were dozens of things she’d saved from our childhood: report cards, drawings, hospital bracelets, old photographs.
And two small notebooks.
That’s when I got an idea.
“Mom,” I said, “I forgot your real present at home. Can we do gifts again tomorrow?”
Melissa laughed.
“You’re making her wait another day?”
I ignored her.
The next afternoon, everyone returned for leftover cake.
I placed a large wrapped box in front of Mom.
Melissa leaned back, amused.
Mom removed the paper.
Inside was a scrapbook I’d made from copies of everything she’d kept: photographs, Mother’s Day cards, little notes we’d written as children.
Mom covered her mouth.

Her smile disappeared.

I looked at her.

“You just tried to grab Mom.”

Mom looked up at us.
“Melissa.”
Something in her voice made both of us stop.
Mom unlocked the drawer.
Inside were several folders, envelopes, and an old checkbook.
Nothing about them looked dramatic.
Mom pulled out a folder and placed it on the bed.
“Here.”
I opened it.
The first page showed a bank transfer from 14 years earlier.
I recognized the amount immediately.
“$35,000?”
Melissa stared at the floor.
I looked at Mom.
“Was this for their house?”
Mom nodded.
I already knew she’d helped Melissa and her husband with their down payment.
I hadn’t known exactly how much, but that wasn’t enough to explain Melissa’s panic.
Then I noticed the date written in the corner.
It matched the date in Mom’s notebook.
Beside it was another date, nearly three years later.
“What is that?”
Melissa answered before Mom could.
“When I was supposed to pay it back.”
I stared at her.
“You borrowed it?”
“It wasn’t like that.”
“It says $35,000 and then a repayment date. That sounds exactly like borrowing.”
Mom touched my shoulder.
“Amanda.”
But I’d already found another document.
$18,000.
Different year.
Different repayment date.
“What was this?”
Melissa crossed her arms.
“Things were tight.”
“Your husband owned a clinic.”
“One clinic, Amanda. And it was barely staying open then.”
I pulled out another sheet.
$12,500.
Then $27,000.
I looked at Mom’s notebook again.
There they were.
Every amount.
Every date.
The meaningless columns I’d copied because I thought they were part of Mom’s personal history suddenly had a completely different meaning.
I sat on the edge of the bed and started matching them.
“Stop,” Melissa said.
I ignored her.
One payment came from around the time her second child was born.
Another was made shortly before her husband opened his second clinic.
I remembered Melissa talking then about how stressful the expansion had been.
I remembered Mom suddenly deciding her 12-year-old car could last “another few years.”
Another transfer came from a year Mom had backed out of a trip with friends because she said it was too expensive.
I looked at her.
“Mom, how much did you give her?”
She hesitated.
“I’d have to add it up.”
“I do.”
Melissa moved toward me.
“Amanda, don’t.”
That made me keep going.
I added the amounts on my phone.
When the total appeared, I checked it twice.
Then a third time.
“$137,500 dollars.”
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Melissa.
Her purse was sitting downstairs on Mom’s dining table.
I’d noticed it yesterday because she’d spent several minutes telling us how hard it had been to find in the color she wanted.
And she’d given Mom $20.
“You owe her $137,500?”
“No.”
I actually laughed.
“No?”
“That’s not what this is.”
“There are repayment dates written beside every amount.”
“Mom never wanted it back.”
“How convenient.”
“It’s true.”
I turned to Mom.
“Is it?”
She sat beside me.
“Yes.”
That answer stopped me.
“What?”
“I never counted on Melissa paying me back.”
I looked from her to the documents.
“Then why did you write all this down?”
Mom took the notebook from my hands.
“Because I needed to remember how much she’d received.”
“For what?”
She was quiet for a moment.
“For you.”
I couldn’t speak.
Mom opened the notebook to another page.
There was my name.
Underneath it, almost nothing.
“I don’t understand.”
“Melissa needed help earlier,” Mom said. “You didn’t. That doesn’t mean one of you should eventually get more than the other.”
Melissa sank into the chair near the window.
Mom continued.
“Some of it started as loans. Melissa always said she’d pay me when they were doing better. I wrote down the dates because that’s what we’d agreed.”
“But you didn’t make her repay you.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Mom looked genuinely surprised by the question.
“Because by then I didn’t need her to.”
“That’s not the point.”
“It is to me.”
She closed the folder.
“I have two daughters. Anything I leave behind will eventually belong to the two of you anyway. Melissa needed part of hers early. So I gave it to her early.”
I stared at the notebook.
“Then why keep the amounts?”
“So when the time comes, what Melissa already received is taken into account. You receive an equivalent amount before whatever is left is divided between you.”
For several seconds, all I could hear was the clock in the hallway.
I’d gone into that drawer expecting proof that Melissa had taken advantage of Mom.
Instead, I was looking at proof that Mom had been thinking about both of us the entire time.
Even when I hadn’t known there was anything to think about.
“I don’t want $137,500,” I said.
Mom smiled faintly.
“I know.”
“That’s not why I’m upset.”
“I know that too.”
I looked at Melissa.
“Did you know?”
“Know what?”
“That Mom considered this part of your inheritance.”
Melissa didn’t answer.
“Melissa.”
“Yes.”
The anger came back so quickly that I stood.
“You knew?”
“Mom told me.”
“So you knew she wasn’t expecting this back. You knew she’d given you over a hundred thousand dollars. And yesterday you handed her twenty bucks.”
“Amanda, this isn’t about the twenty dollars.”
“You’re right. It isn’t.”
Mom stood too.
“Enough.”
“No, Mom.”
I turned to her.
“How many times have you told me you couldn’t afford something?”
“I never said I couldn’t afford it.”
“You said things were too expensive.”
“Sometimes they were.”
“Your car was falling apart before you replaced it.”
“It ran.”
“You canceled that trip with your friends.”
“I didn’t care that much about going.”
“You always say that.”
Mom’s expression changed.
Not anger.
Something closer to sadness.
“Amanda, I chose what to do with my money.”
That quieted me.
“I wasn’t tricked,” she continued. “Melissa didn’t steal from me. I helped my daughter because I wanted to help her.”
Melissa looked up.
Mom glanced at her, then back at me.
“I was proud when they bought that house. I was proud when the clinics started doing well. I loved watching her children while she worked. Don’t turn things I was happy to give into something ugly.”
I sat back down.
She was right.
I wanted Mom to be angry because I was angry.
But they weren’t the same thing.
Still, one question wouldn’t leave me.
I looked toward the scrapbook Melissa had dropped on the dresser.
“Then why did you hide the birthday card under your plate?”
Mom froze.
Melissa looked at her.
“Mom?”
Mom busied herself putting the documents back into the folder.
“It was nothing.”
“No,” I said. “That’s what you always say.”
She gave me a warning look.
I softened my voice.
“Did yesterday hurt you?”
Mom didn’t answer.
Melissa stood.
“Mom, I was joking.”
“I know.”
“I didn’t mean anything by it.”
“I know that too.”
Mom closed the drawer but didn’t lock it.
Then she looked at Melissa.
“It wasn’t the twenty dollars.”
Melissa’s shoulders relaxed slightly.
Mom noticed.
“Don’t look so relieved.”
Melissa’s face fell.
“You could have given me nothing,” Mom said. “You could have written ‘Happy birthday’ on a piece of notebook paper, and I would have been happy.”
“Then what did I do?”
Mom’s voice was quiet.
“You said, ‘At her age, she doesn’t need much.'”
Melissa stared at her.
“I was kidding.”
“I know.”
“Then why are we doing this?”
Mom took a breath.
“Because I’m seventy, Melissa. I’m not finished.”
Nobody moved.
“I still like things. I still want to go places. I still get excited. I still want people to think about me sometimes.”
Melissa’s eyes filled.
Mom continued.
“I’ve spent years telling you girls not to worry about me. Maybe I did that too well.”
I looked at Melissa.
She wiped beneath one eye.
“I didn’t mean you weren’t worth anything.”
“I know you didn’t.”
Mom’s voice broke slightly.
“But for one second yesterday, that’s how it felt.”
Melissa sat down again.
For the first time since Mom opened the drawer, she didn’t defend herself.
Her gaze landed on the scrapbook.
She picked it up.
Several pages had bent when she’d grabbed it earlier.
Melissa smoothed one with her palm.
It showed a Mother’s Day card she’d made when she was seven.
The letters were uneven, and she’d drawn Mom with purple hair because apparently we’d owned only five crayons that year.
Melissa laughed once through her tears.
“You kept this?”
“Of course.”
She turned another page.
A flower made of construction paper.
A photograph of us in matching pajamas.
A note I’d written Mom apologizing for breaking a lamp and blaming the cat.
Then Melissa found a tiny folded card she’d made as a teenager.
There was nothing expensive anywhere in that scrapbook.
Most of it was paper.
Some of it was barely recognizable.
Mom had kept all of it.
Melissa stared at the pages for a long time.
Then she looked at the twenty-dollar bill still sticking out of yesterday’s birthday card on the dresser.
“I get it.”
Mom sat beside her.
Melissa shook her head.
“No, I really get it.”
She looked at me.
“I didn’t want you seeing those records because I knew what you’d think.”
“What would I think?”
“That everything I have came from Mom.”
“I don’t think that.”
“I thought you would.”
Her voice dropped.
“Every time she helped us, I told myself it was temporary. Then things got better, and she’d tell me to forget about paying her. After a while…”
She stopped.
“After a while, what?” I asked.
Melissa looked at Mom.
“After a while, I stopped thinking about what it cost her.”
Mom reached for her hand.
Melissa started crying harder.
“That’s horrible.”
“It’s honest,” Mom said.
Melissa shook her head.
“You made it so easy to take.”
Mom smiled sadly.
“That was probably my mistake.”
“No. It was mine.”
Melissa looked around the bedroom, at the old furniture and the neatly repaired curtains Mom had refused to replace because they were “still perfectly good.”
“I kept hearing you say you didn’t need anything, and eventually I started believing it.”
She swallowed.
“Not just money. Anything.”
Mom squeezed her hand.
“I’m sorry,” Melissa said. “Not because I gave you twenty dollars. I’m sorry I started acting like because you never asked me for anything, there wasn’t anything you needed from me.”
Mom pulled her into a hug.
I turned away for a second because suddenly I was crying too.
When I looked back, Melissa had opened the scrapbook again.
Near the beginning was an old photograph of Mom standing beside a lake, probably in her twenties.
She was laughing with her shoes in one hand and her jeans rolled to her knees.
Melissa touched the picture.
“Where was this?”
Mom smiled.
“Lake Briar.”
“You used to talk about that place.”
“I still do.”
“I thought you hadn’t been there since we were kids.”
“I haven’t.”
Melissa studied her.
“Do you still want to go?”
Mom blinked.
“What?”
“To the lake. Do you still want to go?”
A slow smile spread across Mom’s face.
“Of course I do.”
Melissa nodded.
“Then let’s go.”
Mom laughed.
“All of us?”
Melissa looked at me.
“If Amanda can stand being around me for a weekend.”
“I’ll think about it.”
She rolled her eyes, and for the first time all afternoon, it felt normal.
Mom put the scrapbook on her lap.
Later, before we left, I saw her return the folders to the drawer.
She locked it again.
“Still keeping records?” I asked.
“Absolutely.”
I smiled.
“You really plan to make everything equal?”
Mom slipped the brass key into her pocket.
“As equal as I can.”
I hugged her.
For years, I’d thought Mom lived modestly because she didn’t want much.
Melissa had apparently believed the same thing.
We were both wrong.
Mom wanted plenty.
She just wanted her daughters to have what they needed first.
And somewhere along the way, Melissa had mistaken that generosity for proof that Mom required nothing in return.
The twenty dollars wasn’t what exposed her.
It was the sentence she’d used to explain it.
At 70, Mom didn’t need less love, less thought, or fewer things to look forward to.
If anything, after spending so much of her life giving us what we needed, it was finally time for us to start asking what she wanted.
