I sat down.

“No.”

David sat beside me.

We went inside.

Put on pajamas.

Around 10:30 p.m., there was a knock.
David opened the door.
Ethan stood outside.
He looked terrible.
Not dramatic teenage terrible.
Actually shaken.
“Can I talk to Mom?”
David looked at me.
Then nodded and left the room.
Ethan came in.
He didn’t sit beside me immediately.
He stood near the door.
“I’m sorry.”
I folded my hands in my lap.
“For what?”
He winced.
“You know.”
“I want you to say it.”
He swallowed.
“For what I said at the pool.”

“That’s where you came out. You almost didn’t. She was on the table for four hours, and at one point they stopped talking to me and started moving very fast, and a nurse took me out into the hallway and asked if there was anyone I wanted to call.”
My eyes blurred.
I remembered that hallway only through David’s stories.
The nurse asking who to call.
His mother answering on the first ring.
David telling her, “Something’s wrong.”

“You know we tried for a long time before you. You don’t know it was seven years. You don’t know how many times it didn’t work. You don’t know what your mother was like in those years because she made sure you never saw any of it.”
I stopped.
“Ethan.”
He didn’t turn.
“Keep reading.”
So I did.
“She ate for two because she was terrified of losing you. She did everything anyone told her and some things nobody told her. She gained a lot of weight, and she never lost it. And I want you to understand that she did not lose it because her body was busy keeping you alive.”
My hand started shaking.
David had never said that to me.
Not like that.
The next message read, “She calls you her miracle. She has called you that since the day you were born, and I don’t think you’ve ever wondered why.”
I covered my mouth.
Ethan’s shoulders were shaking now too.
Then came the message he later told me he’d read four times.
I swallowed before I started reading it.
“Your mother is not ashamed of that scar. She has never once been ashamed of it. She told me years ago that it’s the only part of her body she’d never change, because it’s the proof you’re here.”
“She stood up in front of everyone today and let it show for the first time in 15 years.”
“And the first thing she heard was you.”
I stopped reading.
That one hurt more than the comment itself.

“Like what?”
“Like everything is about whether they look good.”
He wiped his face.
“And I didn’t want them seeing the picture.”
“What picture?”
“The one Rachel was going to take.”
“Why?”
“I thought if I posted it…”
He stopped.
“You were embarrassed of me?” I asked.
He nodded.
That hurt.

“I forgive you,” I said.
He looked at me.
“But don’t ask me to pretend it didn’t hurt,” I added.
“I won’t.”
“And don’t apologize because Dad scared you.”
“He didn’t.”
“What did he do?”
“He made me feel like an idiot.”
I almost smiled.
“He’s talented that way.”
Ethan laughed weakly.
Then he became serious again.
“I didn’t know you covered the scar because people stared.”
“I’ve gotten used to hiding.”
“Why did you stop today?”
I thought about it.
“Because I was tired of disappearing from family pictures.”
He looked down.
There were albums full of Ethan and David.

Birthdays.

I was often behind the camera.
When I appeared, I cropped.

“I made you want to hide again,” Ethan said quietly.
“Yes,” I admitted.
His eyes dropped. “I’m sorry.”

I held up Ethan’s phone.

David nodded.

“Liar.”

The next morning, we were supposed to take a family photo before breakfast.
Rachel had been planning it all week.
I almost canceled.
Instead, I put on the same swimsuit.
Then stood in front of the mirror holding my cover-up.

Then heard a knock.
It was Ethan.
“You ready?” he asked.
“Almost.”
He looked at the cover-up.
Then at me.
“Don’t.”

“What?”
“Don’t wear it because of me,” he said.

“I’m allowed to wear clothes, Ethan.”
“I know.”
He looked mortified.

David stood beside me.
Ethan wandered off to the edge.
