I walked away from the table.
“Did something break?”
“No.”
“Did you damage the floor?”
“No.”
“The frame?”
“No, sir.”
I looked back at my parents.
My mother had stopped drinking her lemonade.
She was watching me now.
“Then what’s wrong?”
There was a pause. “The old bed is still where it was.”
I frowned. “Why?”
“We started lifting it.”
“And?”
The man exhaled.
Then said, “That’s when we stopped.”
I waited. He didn’t continue.
“What did you find?”
“I’m not going to explain it over the phone.”
That irritated me. “We’re 40 minutes away.”
“I understand.”
“So tell me.”
Another pause.
Then, carefully, “How long has that bed been in the house?”
I glanced at my parents again.
My father had finally noticed something was wrong.
“A long time.”
“How long?”
“I don’t know. Thirty years, maybe.”
The line went quiet.
Then the man said, “Come back and look for yourself.”
My name is David. I’m 48.
My parents, Harold and Margaret, are in their 70s.
The three of us had been sitting outside a fish place near the beach that Saturday because I had deliberately gotten them out of the house for a few hours.
The house itself sits about 90 minutes from where they live.
Calling it a country house makes it sound much nicer than it is.
It’s small.
Two bedrooms. One bathroom.
A porch that leans slightly left.
Windows that stick in humid weather.
Pipes that make sounds like someone trapped inside the walls.
My parents love it.
They’ve had it since I was a teenager. They go up when the weather is good, stay a few nights, complain about everything that needs fixing, and then fix almost nothing.
That’s how the bedroom became a problem.
I noticed it properly a few months earlier.
I’d gone up to open the windows and air the place out before my parents arrived.
When I pulled the sheets off their bed, I just stood there.
The mattress sagged badly in the middle.
The fabric had gone gray.
There was a brown ring near one corner and several older stains underneath it.
When Mom walked in, I pointed.
“You’re still sleeping on this?”
She didn’t even look concerned. “It’s fine.”
“Fine?”
“We only sleep here.”
“Mom, this thing looks archaeological.”
She laughed.
My father appeared in the doorway. “What’s wrong now?”
“Your mattress.”
He shrugged. “Still works.”
“Mattresses don’t work. They exist.”
“Then it still exists.”
I looked at Mom. “How old is this thing?”
She started folding towels. “I don’t know.”
Dad said, “We bought it when we got the house.”
I stared at him. “You bought this mattress when you bought the house?”
“Probably.”
“When was that?”
Neither answered immediately. Then Mom said, “1994.”
I actually laughed.
“No.”
“What?”
“This mattress is from 1994?”
Dad shrugged. “It was a good one.”
“That was 31 years ago.”
“So?”
“So I’ve had relationships that lasted less time than this mattress.”
Mom nodded toward Dad.
He looked offended. “I heard that.”
“You were meant to.”
I told them I was replacing it.
Both said no.
Mom said it was wasteful.
Dad said modern mattresses were overpriced.
I ignored them.
My sister, Lauren, encouraged me.
“Don’t ask,” she said over the phone. “Just book it.”
“They’ll complain.”
“They complain when restaurants put too much ice in water.”
Fair.
So I ordered a new mattress.
Delivery Saturday.
Old mattress removal included.
I even paid $30 extra because I knew if the old one stayed on the property, Dad would drag it into the shed and say somebody might need it someday.
The plan was simple. Meet the delivery men. Let them in.
Take my parents out for a few hours.
Come back. New bed. No argument.
At least not until they saw the bill. The truck arrived shortly after ten.
Mom looked through the front window.
“You actually bought one?”
“Yes.”
“David.”
“It’s happening.”
“The old one is perfectly good.”
One of the delivery men glanced toward the bedroom.
I caught his expression.
“Don’t encourage her,” I said.
He smiled.
His name was Chris. The younger guy with him was Mateo.
I gave Chris my number and the gate code.
He said they’d handle everything.
So my parents and I left.
And for a while, the day was completely normal.
Dad fell asleep in a folding chair at the beach with a newspaper over his face.
Mom walked barefoot near the water.
Then we went for lunch.
Dad complained that $18 for fish was “organized robbery.”
Mom stole two fries from his plate.
Then my phone rang.
Now I was standing beside the restaurant, listening to Chris tell me not to bring my mother back.
I returned to the table.
Dad pointed his fork at me. “Who died?”
“No one.”
Mom frowned. “What happened?”
“Something with the delivery.”
“What?”
“I need to go back.”
Dad started pushing his chair away from the table.
“I’ll come.”
“No.”
Both of them looked at me. “No?”
“I’ll handle it.”
Mom narrowed her eyes. “You have the face.”
“What face?”
“The face you had when you backed my car into the garage.”
“I was 17.”
“Same face.”
Dad said, “Did they break something?”
“No.”
That part, at least, was true.
Mom reached across the table and caught my wrist.
“David.”
I looked at her.
“Is something wrong at the house?”
I almost told her what Chris had said.
Then I remembered his voice.
Come alone.
“I don’t know yet.”
She kept looking at me. I left before she could ask anything else.
The whole drive back, I kept trying to guess what two delivery men could find under a bed that would make them stop working.
Mold?
An animal nest?
Rot?
Money?
A gun?
By the time I reached the house, I’d imagined everything except what was actually there.
Chris was waiting outside. Mateo sat on the porch steps.
Neither looked relaxed.
I got out. “What happened?”
Chris nodded toward the hallway. “You should see it.”
I followed him inside.
The new mattress was leaning against the wall.
The old one had been lifted halfway off the frame and propped at an angle.
At first, I didn’t understand.
Then I saw the paper. Envelopes.
Dozens of them.
No.
More than dozens.
They had been laid flat under the mattress in overlapping rows.
Some were yellow with age.
Others looked newer.
A few photographs had slipped loose when the mattress moved.
I stepped closer. “What is all this?”
Chris stayed near the doorway. “We don’t know.”
I crouched.
Dates were written across the envelopes.
Some had names.
HAROLD.
LAUREN.
Then I saw mine.
DAVID.
I recognized the handwriting. My mother’s.
My stomach tightened. “You didn’t open any?”
“No.”
Mateo appeared behind Chris. “Show him the box.”
I looked up. “What box?”
Near the head of the bed, wedged between the slats and the wall, was a small metal cash box.
The lid had shifted open.
Inside were papers, photographs, and two faded plastic bands.
I pulled it closer.
The first band had my mother’s name on it.
MARGARET. April 17, 1994.
I frowned.
I was 16 then.
Lauren was 12.
The second band was harder to read.
The print had faded.
I held it toward the window.
I read the words.
Then read them again.
I didn’t understand what they meant. Not yet.
Chris said, “That’s when we called you.”
I put both bands down. “Why?”
He looked at the second one.
Then back at me.
“I figured whatever this is, it belongs to your family.”
He and Mateo moved the new mattress into the other bedroom.
They refused to touch anything else.
Before leaving, Chris said, “For what it’s worth, we didn’t read the letters.”
“Thanks.”
He nodded.
Then I was alone. I called Lauren.
She answered, “How bad is the mattress?”
“Do you remember Mom being in the hospital in 1994?”
Silence.
“What?”
“April.”
“I was 12.” She said.
“I know.”
“Why are you asking me this?”
I looked at the plastic bands.
“Do you remember anything happening?”
“No.”
“Nothing?”
“David, what is going on?”
I didn’t know. Not fully.
“There are things under the bed.”
“What things?”
“Letters.”
“Whose?”
“Mom’s.”
“To whom?”
I looked at the envelope dated April 19, 1994.
After we hung up, I opened it.
The first line said, “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with all this love now.”
I sat on the floor. The letter was six pages.
At first, it made almost no sense.
Mom wrote about not sleeping.
About Dad refusing to talk.
About not wanting Lauren and me involved.
Then I reached one sentence.
“Harold keeps saying we need to go home to the children we still have.”
I stopped.
“Still have.”
I read it again. Then kept going.
Halfway down the next page, “I held you for 11 minutes.”
My hands went cold.
I looked toward the cash box.
The second plastic band.
I picked it up again.
This time I forced myself to make out every faded letter.
INFANT FEMALE ELLIS.
I sat completely still.
Then I opened another envelope.
“You would be one today.”
Another.
“You would be two.”
“You would be three.”
I stopped opening them.
I called Lauren again.
She answered immediately.
“Davidl?”
“We had another sister.”
Nothing.
Then, “What?”
“Mom had another baby.”
“When?”
“1994.”
Lauren whispered, “No.”
“She died.”
I heard her breathe in. “How do you know?”
“Mom wrote letters.”
“Does Dad know?”
I looked across the rows of envelopes.
Then I saw one that wasn’t in Mom’s handwriting.
It was dated 2009.
MARGARET.
“I think he does.”
I opened it.
Dad’s first line was, “I found what you’ve been keeping under the bed.”
He knew.
He had known for years.
The letter was only two pages.
He wrote that he was sorry.
That Mom had almost died during the delivery.
That while she was sedated, hospital staff had asked him about burial arrangements, paperwork, and whether they wanted to name the baby.
He had made the decisions.
No funeral. No individual burial. No telling Lauren and me.
Then one line stopped me.
“I thought if I refused to give grief a place in our house, it couldn’t stay.”
I heard a car outside.
My parents were back.
I walked into the living room holding the hospital band.
Mom came through the door first.
She saw it. And stopped.
Dad came in behind her. His eyes dropped to my hand.
Nobody spoke.
Then Mom said quietly, “They lifted the mattress.”
Not a question.
I nodded.
Dad set his keys down. “How much did you read?”
“Enough.”
I looked at Mom. “I had a sister?”
Her face changed. “Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?” I asked.
Dad answered.
“I decided you were too young.”
I turned toward him. “You decided?”
“David—”
“No.”
I held up the band. “Did she have a name?”
Mom looked at Dad. He looked away.
That told me there had been an argument about this long before I’d ever known.
Dad finally said, “Your mother wanted Anna.”
I looked at Mom. “Was that her name?”
Her voice broke. “It was to me.”
Lauren arrived less than an hour later.
She had driven up without telling anyone.
When Mom saw her, she started crying.
Lauren sat beside her. “I would’ve wanted to know.”
Mom nodded. “I know.”
“Even at 12.”
“I know.”
He stared at the floor. “I thought it would make everything worse.”
Mom’s voice sharpened. “She was already real, Harold.”
“I know.”
“You don’t get to make someone less real because you’re afraid.”
Dad didn’t argue. He rubbed both hands across his face.
“Your mother was bleeding. Doctors were running everywhere. The baby wasn’t breathing. Someone handed me forms and started asking questions.”
He swallowed. “I panicked.”
Mom said, “So you chose for everyone.”
“Yes.”
“And then kept choosing for 31 years.”
He looked at her. “Yes.”
That was the first time I’d ever heard my father admit something without defending himself.
Mom walked toward the bedroom. We followed.
She stood in the doorway, looking at the letters spread across the exposed frame.
Thirty-one years of them.
She covered her mouth. “I thought they’d stay there until I died.”
Lauren touched her arm. “You wrote every year?”
Mom nodded. “Every birthday.”
Then she saw Dad’s 2009 letter.
Her expression changed. “You wrote to me?”
Dad nodded. “You never gave me this.”
“I didn’t know how.”
Mom gave a broken laugh. “Apparently three decades wasn’t enough time.”
Nobody answered.
We spent the afternoon talking. Mom told us what she could.
Anna had dark hair. She weighed five pounds, nine ounces.
Mom held her for 11 minutes.
Then Dad quietly said, “I held her too.”
Mom turned. “You told me you didn’t.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
He stared at the floor. “Because I thought if I admitted it, you’d make me talk about her.”
Mom looked at him for a long time. “You spent 31 years afraid of one conversation.”
He nodded. “Yes.”
We didn’t move the old mattress that day.
Mom wasn’t ready.
The following week, Lauren tracked down the burial records.
The hospital had arranged for her burial in a communal cemetery section.
Two Sundays later, all four of us went.
Mom brought flowers. Dad brought nothing.
Halfway there, he asked me to stop at a garden center.
He came back carrying white roses.
Mom looked at them. “For Anna?”
He nodded.
She took his hand. That was all.
We’re arranging a small plaque now.

APRIL 17, 1994.
BELOVED DAUGHTER AND SISTER.
Mom insisted on “sister.”
Lauren and I did too.
Last weekend, the mattress finally left. Dad helped carry it outside. He stood beside it in the driveway.
“Thirty-one years,” I said.
He nodded. “Your mother was right.”
“About replacing it?”
He looked back toward the house. “About more than that.”
Mom kept every letter.
They’re in a cedar box now.
Not under the bed.
Before I left, she handed me one sealed envelope.
My name was on it.
“I wrote this for you.”
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
“You were 16.”
“And now?”
She smiled sadly.
“Now you’re 48.”
I opened it after I got home.
The final paragraph said, “You had another sister for 11 minutes. Her name was Anna. I hope someday saying her name doesn’t hurt this much.”
A few days later, Mom sent a picture of the new mattress to our family group chat.
Dad was lying diagonally across it with his shoes on.
Lauren replied, “DISGUSTING. REMOVE HIM.”
Mom wrote, “He’s older than the last mattress. Too late to return him.”
Then Dad sent, “Anna would’ve taken my side.”
Nobody responded for almost a minute.
I stared at his message.
It was the first time I’d ever seen my father write her name.
Then Mom sent a white heart. Lauren sent one. So did I.
Thirty-one years late. But at least now, nobody has to hide her name beneath a mattress.
