I was standing in my kitchen with one hand inside the laundry basket when the principal called.

“We’d also like to share a short post about what she did. Nothing elaborate. Just something for the school community.”

Ariel looked up.
“Do we have to?”
“No,” Mr. Reed said. “Only with your mother’s permission. And you have a say, of course.”
I should’ve stopped there.

Then she tucked the case into the wooden box.

“If I save my money again and I want to help somebody, do I still have to tell you?”
I smiled.
“Really.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m still your mother.”
She rolled her eyes.
“But I’ll listen before I tell you what I think you should do.”
“That’s better.”
“Because I’m still your mother.”
I looked at the wooden box: no certificate, no award, no screenshots, just one private note from one woman to one little girl.
Ariel closed the lid.
I left it closed.
