One woman behind us lowered her eyes immediately. Another man stared at his screen with such concentration that I knew he was listening to every word.

“Oh my God.”
Something in his voice made two employees behind the counter exchange nervous glances.
The manager crossed her arms. “Who exactly are you?”
An older waitress near the coffee machine dropped the spoon she was holding. It clattered against the counter.

The waitress stared at him. “Sir?”
“You expect me to believe that?”
The old man finally looked at the manager.
“I own this café.”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then the manager laughed once.

“Call the management company.”
He reached inside his jacket and handed her a card.
“Call the management company. Ask for the owner listed on your contract.”
She looked down. The color slowly left her face.
“I stepped away from daily operations because I trusted people to remember why this place existed,” he said. “Apparently, that was a mistake.”
“You allowed customers to insult a child.”
His eyes moved to Lindsey.
“I built this café around one simple idea. Families should never have to apologize for being families,” he added and pointed toward the empty corner. “This was never what I built.”
The manager swallowed. “Our numbers are excellent.”
“A full room means very little if you’ve driven away the people this place was created for.”
“You’re fired.”
She started to speak, but he cut her off. “You allowed customers to insult a child. Then you punished him for laughing, threw him out on his birthday, and called it maintaining an atmosphere.”
He held out his hand.
“Give me your keys.”
Her face went blank.
“You’re fired.”
“You are free to leave with her.”
The room became utterly silent.
Then he turned toward the customers. “And if anyone here believes she was right to throw a child out for eating birthday pie, you are free to leave with her.”
The man who had complained about Lindsey stared at his laptop. The woman beside him quietly began packing hers.
