I was tall, broad-shouldered, and rarely seen without a smile. The guys at the hardware store where I worked used to bet on which one of them would beat me in a deadlift contest. None of them ever did.

I wasn’t supposed to be there, according to a chart in a filing cabinet somewhere. According to that chart, I was supposed to be gone by then, or well on my way. “With respect, Ms. Martinez, you don’t. She’s upstairs asleep in a room that still smells of her mom’s shampoo. I’m the one who’s going to sit with her when she wakes up. Not a committee.”

“I’ll bring your file back to the table,” she said finally. “That’s all I can promise today.”
I thanked her and hung up. I sat at the kitchen table and stared at the half-empty glass of water that Natalie had left, and I didn’t touch it because moving it felt like an admission.
The doorbell rang around noon.

Meredith stood on the porch with a casserole in one hand and a yellow legal pad in the other. My older sister has exactly two coping mechanisms, and both of them were currently in her arms.
“Move,” she said, brushing past me. “Where’s the kid?”
“Sleeping again. Meredith…”
“Don’t Meredith me. Sit.”
She set the casserole on the stove without breaking stride. She set the legal pad in front of me and clicked a pen like she was arming a weapon.
“Where’s the kid?”
“You are going to fight them,” my sister said. “And I am going to help you. And we’re going to eat something that isn’t gas station coffee while we do it.”
“They said the prognosis…”
“I know what they said.”
Meredith sat across from me. For a second, her whole tough-sister act cracked, and I saw my big sister the way she looked when we were kids, and I’d scraped my knee.
“You are going to fight them.”
“You’re not losing that little girl on my watch,” she said quietly. “Now start talking. Who do we call first?”
I looked at the legal pad, then at my sister. I picked up the pen.
I had a feeling that the fight would take everything I had left, and then some I’d have to borrow.
The paperwork war began the Monday after Meredith’s casserole night.

“Guardianship first,” my sister said. “Then medical directives. Then the pediatrician’s letter. Then we bribe the mailman if we have to.”

I named Meredith as Carrie’s future guardian on a Tuesday. I signed financial plans on a Wednesday. By Friday, I had a folder thick enough to stop a bullet, which felt appropriate given how the caseworker looked at me.

Ms. Martinez wasn’t cruel. She was just doing her job.
“Daniel, I understand what you’re trying to build here,” she said. “But my job is to imagine the worst day of Carrie’s life and prevent the second one.”
“My job is to ensure that now that the worst day has already happened,” I said. “Everything after is us climbing back.”
She wrote something down. I chose to believe it was flattering.

Dr. Weller wrote a supportive letter, which I appreciated, although he handed it to me the way a guy hands over the last slice of pizza he actually wanted. His hands were shaking a little. He apologized and blamed it on a cardiac scare he’d had over the summer.
“You should retire before I do, Doc,” I joked.
My doctor didn’t laugh. He didn’t quite look at me, either.
His hands were shaking.
“My old mentor from the specialty clinic retired last month,” he said, almost to himself. “Funny how that goes.”
I chalked his behavior up to the changes in his life.

Carrie, meanwhile, was running the household like a small, gap-toothed executive to deal with her grief. She reorganized my pill bottles by color and time of day and slapped stickers on every cap. Blue for the morning. Yellow for noon. A tiny frowning cat for the nighttime ones because, and I quote, “cats know sleep best.”

“He’s the only dad I have,” my daughter whispered. “Please, let us not waste a single day.”

I sat with it.
The room tilted.

Then Dr. Weller slid a sealed envelope across the desk.
“From Natalie’s estate. Months before the accident, she donated her body to medical science. In your honor. She wanted whatever they learned from her to help someone like you.”
I laughed and cried because, of course, she did!

I stood up and rested a hand on my doctor’s shoulder.
“It took guts to finally say it aloud. I’m not going to pretend that fixes a decade of lies. But I’m not going to carry it for you either.”
Dr. Weller nodded, wordless.

Carrie stared up at me, confused.
“What are you saying, Dan?” Meredith asked.
“I’m sincerely heartbroken.”
I sat down and reached out to embrace them both.
“I’m saying I’m not dying. I’ve been given a new lease on life.”
Tears sprang to their eyes, and Carrie leaned into my shoulder.
“Good. We weren’t done anyway,” my daughter replied.
We all laughed, and I swear I felt Natalie join in on the hug.
