I stared at her. “It was from your registry.”
“I know. I’m just saying, these things happen.” She nudged one of the broken pieces with her shoe. “Honestly, you shouldn’t look so upset. It’s my wedding.”
“I’m not upset. I’m surprised.”
“At least it wasn’t anything expensive.”
“Good.” She smiled. “I’d hate for you to make a scene over a few pots.”
Then she noticed the honeymoon contribution card.
“Four hundred dollars?” Her smile changed. “Oh. So I guess the cookware wasn’t the cheap part.”
I looked up.

“Honestly, you shouldn’t look so upset. It’s my wedding.”
“Four hundred.” She said it like I’d given her four dollars and a coupon.
“I also bought you the cookware.”

A couple standing nearby suddenly became very interested in their drinks.

“Cassie, I bought what I could afford.”
She gave a little laugh.
“For your own sister’s wedding?”
“Yes. For my own sister‘s wedding.”

Then she turned toward another guest carrying a large white envelope.

I gathered the pieces I could salvage, found an employee to help with the rest, and went to get my daughter.
Ellie was ten and had been standing with my mother near our table, watching the whole thing.
“Mom?” she asked as soon as I reached her. “Did Aunt Cassie break your present?”

Ellie gave me the exact same look her father used to give me when he knew I was lying.

As we crossed the room, I tried to swallow the humiliation.

For the next hour, Cassie avoided our table, laughing and posing with everyone else. Eventually, Ellie wandered over to the nearby dessert display, trying to choose between cupcakes and chocolate-covered strawberries.
That was when Lenny approached me.

“She feels like you didn’t even try,” he said. “And we’ve decided we don’t need that kind of energy around us anymore.”
I stared at him.
“What exactly are you saying?”
He exhaled.
“We’d like you to leave.”

“With Ellie.”
My stomach dropped.
“You’re throwing my ten-year-old daughter out of a wedding because I gave you four hundred dollars?”
“Don’t make it dramatic.”

Before I could answer, Ellie appeared beside us holding a small plate with a chocolate-covered strawberry and two tiny pastries.
Lenny looked at the plate.
“Actually, we’re going to need that left here.”
Ellie blinked.
“What?”
“The desserts are for wedding guests.”
“Don’t make it dramatic.”
I don’t think I’ve ever looked at another human being the way I looked at Lenny then.
Ellie slowly put the plate on the nearest table.
Her face went red.
That hurt me more than anything Cassie had said.
“Mommy,” she whispered, “are we not guests anymore?”
“Your gift.”
I crouched in front of her.
“You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“But Aunt Cassie—”
“Go with Grandma for a minute, okay?”
My mother was already standing. I waited until they disappeared through the doors. Then I turned back to Lenny.
“Did Cassie actually tell you to throw us out?”
“The desserts are for wedding guests.”
“We decided together.”
“Because of four hundred dollars.”
“It’s not about the number. It’s about effort.”
Something inside me went very quiet.
“Fine,” I said. “I’ll leave.”
Lenny visibly relaxed.
“But first, I want to give my sister the rest of her wedding gift.”
“I’ll leave.”
His expression changed immediately.
“The rest?”
“Yes.”
“I thought—”
“I know what you thought.”
I picked up my purse.
“I was going to do this privately. But apparently we’re past that.”
Lenny didn’t even suspect that he had just missed his only chance to stop me.
“The rest?”
But the microphone was already in my hand. Dozens of faces turned toward me. Cassie was standing beside the dance floor. I smiled at her.
“Dear Cassie. I had another gift planned for you tonight.”
I opened my purse and pulled out a stack of folded papers.

I unfolded the first paper.

“But first, I want to give my sister the rest of her wedding gift.”
People started whispering as I held up the IOU Cassie had written and signed years ago, after insisting on repaying the tuition money I’d given her.
“I pay my debts, Megan.”
So I’d kept it. I tore it in half, and Cassie’s eyes widened.
“Megan.”
I took out another. “Seven thousand five hundred. Apartment deposit and rent.”

“What are you doing?”
“I pay my debts, Megan.”
“Six thousand four hundred. Car.”

Cassie started toward me. “Stop.”
I kept going through the smaller amounts—emergency bills, repairs, things I’d almost forgotten. Every time Cassie needed help, she’d insisted on writing another little promise, and every time I’d accepted it because refusing seemed to embarrass her more. I’d never asked for a cent back.
“Stop.”
Finally, I read the total.
“Thirty-eight thousand dollars.”
The room went silent.
I looked at my sister. “I brought every one of these here tonight because I was going to take you aside after the reception and tear them up.”
Her face changed. It wasn’t anger this time. It was something closer to panic.

I had never planned to collect any of it. I just wanted us to stop keeping score. Something had been wrong between us for years, and maybe tearing up those debts was my way of hoping we could finally be sisters again.
I reached into my purse and took out a small box.
“But I have one more gift.”
I handed it to Cassie. She opened it, looked inside, and immediately snapped the lid shut.
“Megan, what the hell are you doing?”
It was something closer to panic.
“I’m giving it back.”
“Take it.”
“No.”

She shoved the box toward me, but I stepped back.
“You kept that?” she demanded.
“For nineteen years.”
“Take it.”
“You promised me.”
“I promised I’d keep it. I did.”
“Don’t do this here.”
“I’m not doing anything, Cassie. I’m giving it back.”
She grabbed my hair before I even realized she was coming at me.

“Cassie!”
She yanked hard, and when I caught her wrist, she shoved me into a chair. I threw out my arm to stop myself and hit the edge of a table. Pain shot from my wrist to my elbow as Lenny and two guests pulled her away.
“You promised!” Cassie screamed. “You promised you’d never use that against me!”
And suddenly I was twenty again, standing beside my sixteen-year-old sister’s hospital bed.

Cassie had been sick for months. Our parents spent more time talking to doctors than sleeping, and eventually one of those doctors took me aside and told me there was something serious I could do to help her.
“How serious?” I asked.
He hesitated. “Serious enough that I don’t want you saying yes until you understand what it could mean for you.”
“But it could help Cassie?”
“Yes.”
“How serious?”
“Then I’ll do it.”
“Megan, I haven’t even explained the procedure yet.”
“You said it could help her.”
“I also said there are risks. You’ll need tests, and even if everything looks right, no one can promise there won’t be complications.”
Cassie had been sick for months.
I agreed.

After the procedure, I woke up sore and disoriented and immediately asked if Cassie was okay. When they finally let me see her, she started crying.

Before she left the hospital, Cassie took the plastic bracelet from her wrist and pressed it into my hand.

She couldn’t argue with that.
“I don’t regret what I did when you were sixteen,” I said. “I don’t regret college, your apartment, or your car either. But I’m done saving you.”

“It means whatever happens after tonight is yours to fix.”

Two weeks later, Cassie came to my house with thirty-eight thousand dollars. She had canceled the honeymoon, returned what wedding gifts she could, and sold some of the rest.
“I don’t want it.”

“Then what are you doing?”
“I’m paying myself free.”
