It was the kind of scent that clung to your clothes long after you left.
I sat on a hard wooden bench with sawdust still ghosting the seams of my boots and a borrowed tie pressing awkwardly against my throat.
Across from me, five small children sat in a row that was far too neat for their ages.
Lucas, the oldest at six, quietly wiped his little sister’s cheeks with the edge of his shirt.
“It’s okay, Mia,” he whispered. “We just have to wait a little longer.”
I pressed the folder of receipts and legal papers against my knee, willing my hands to stop trembling.
Farther down the corridor, another child sat on a bench beside a caseworker, swinging his feet against the wood.
The social worker glanced up, caught my eye, and gave me the softest, saddest smile I had ever received.
It felt worse than being yelled at.
“Mason?”
I looked up.
A woman in her late 50s stood over me with a stack of forms tucked under one arm.
“I’m Eleanor, one of the clerks here,” she said gently. “You have the 10 o’clock case?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Are you holding up all right?”
“I haven’t slept in three weeks,” I admitted. “So, honestly, no.”
Her eyes softened in a way that made me feel as though she already knew things about me that I had never told her.
“You brought all five children with you?”
“I couldn’t leave them anywhere,” I said. “They’ve already been left too many times.”
She nodded slowly, as if the sentence carried real weight.
Then, she glanced at the children, and I saw her lips tighten before she moved on.
I turned back to them.
Mia, who was no more than three, pressed her forehead against Lucas’s shoulder.
The twins, who were barely four, held hands as though their fingers had been sewn together.
The youngest, still wearing a padded jacket two sizes too big, sat on Lucas’s lap and gripped a stuffed rabbit that was missing one ear.
Three weeks earlier, I had not known any of them.
I had been in my workshop, sanding a table for a client in the next town while listening to the radio.

Then, the bailiff stepped into the hallway and called our case number.
Victoria, my attorney, pulled me into a small side room the moment the court recessed.
“They moved quickly, Mason,” she said. “They arranged everything overnight.”
“How quickly?”
“Three transport vans are scheduled for Friday. The children will be sent to three different counties.”
I set the folder of receipts on the table, but my hand did not want to release it.
Five days. That was all they were giving me.
“Victoria, tell me the truth. What are my chances in there?”
“Honestly? They are slim. The judge does not usually approve single applicants, especially young applicants with no parenting experience.”
Before I could respond, the door opened, and Patricia, the senior caseworker, stepped inside with a clipboard.
“Mason, may I sit down?”
“Please.”
She sat and folded her hands in the practiced manner that social workers often used.
I had seen that same posture across a desk many years earlier, and my stomach tightened before I could stop it.
“I want you to understand that I am not your enemy,” she said quietly. “I have been doing this for 22 years. I have watched good, kind people take on more than they could handle, and I have watched children pay the price.”
“I understand, Patricia. I really do.”
“You have no spouse or co-guardian. You do not currently have medical coverage that extends to five dependents. You converted part of your workshop into living quarters, Mason. The court needs proof that it is a safe home for young children.”
“I built solid oak bunk beds. I insulated the walls, installed smoke detectors, and had the electrical system inspected. I installed five car seats in the van last week. I also contacted a pediatrician on Elm Street, and she agreed to accept all five children as new patients.”
Her expression remained unchanged, but something behind her eyes softened for a moment.
Then, she looked down at her clipboard.
“I would like to speak with Lucas alone, if that is alright.”
Victoria nodded before I could answer.
A minute later, a court aide walked Lucas into the room.
He looked at me first, checking for reassurance, just as he had done every hour for the past three weeks.
“It’s okay, buddy,” I told him. “Just answer her questions honestly.”
He nodded once and sat down.
Patricia leaned forward and asked him about school, food, and whether he felt safe with me.
Lucas answered in a whisper that I could barely hear while his thumb rubbed the ribbon in tight circles.
When the aide took him back outside, the room felt heavier than before.
Patricia stood, thanked me with genuine kindness, and left.
Victoria waited until the door clicked shut.
“Mason, there is something we need to discuss.”
“What is it?”
“The state’s attorney is going to ask you a personal question. He will ask about your background and why you are doing this.”
I felt my jaw tighten.
“He can ask whatever he wants.”
“Mason, listen to me. I have read your file twice. There are gaps that the state’s attorney will notice. If there is something you have not told me, now is the time.”
I stared at a water stain on the ceiling and tried to breathe.
“I have carried this for 20 years, Victoria. I have never even told my closest friends. I don’t know whether I can say it in a room full of strangers.”
“You may have to. The judge may need to hear it more than anyone.”
Before I could answer, the bailiff’s voice rang through the door, calling our case.
At the end of the hallway, the courtroom doors swung open.
Julian, the state’s attorney, rose from his table with the calm posture of a man who had done this hundreds of times.
He did not glance at me as he arranged his charts on the podium.
“Your Honor, I want to begin by acknowledging that Mason’s intentions appear genuine,” he said. “However, good intentions alone cannot raise five children under the age of seven.”
“His residence is a converted workshop space that has not yet received final approval for foster placement. He has no spouse, no co-guardian, no current medical plan capable of covering five dependents, and, with respect, no parenting experience.”
The judge watched me over the rims of his glasses.
I felt every eye in the room settle on my borrowed tie.
“The state has three vetted foster homes prepared to receive these children by Friday,” Julian continued. “Their separation is regrettable, but the state must prioritize stability.”
Victoria leaned toward me.
“Stay calm,” she whispered. “Answer only what he asks.”
I took the stand.
My hands felt too large for the wooden rail.
“Mason, you work as a carpenter, correct?” Julian asked.
“Yes, sir. I have worked at the same shop for 11 years.”
“And you converted part of that property into bedrooms for five children?”
“I built bunk beds along the north wall. I insulated the space, completed the safety work, and arranged for inspections. I also contacted a pediatrician before this hearing.”
“That is commendable. However, you have no wife, no partner, and no living parents listed in your file. Why would a young man in his prime willingly take on this kind of responsibility and debt?”
“Because they need someone.”
“Many children need someone, Mason. You did not petition for any other children. You petitioned for these five. Why?”
I looked past him.
Lucas sat in the back row with the youngest child on his lap.
One of his small hands rested against his sister’s back to keep her steady.
“Because they’re siblings,” I said.
“Many siblings are separated every year in this state,” Julian replied. “That fact alone is not a sufficient legal argument.”
“It should be.”
He almost smiled.
“Mason, there are unexplained gaps in your background between the ages of nine and 17. The court should understand those years before it places five children in your care.”
The room became so quiet that I could feel the silence in my ribs.
I looked down at my hands.
“I would rather not discuss that, sir.”
“I’m sure you would rather not,” Julian said gently. “However, this court is being asked to place five human beings in your care. The court is entitled to understand who you are.”
“Objection,” Victoria said. “The question is overly broad and invades my client’s privacy.”
The judge held up one hand.
“I’ll allow a narrower version of the question.”
Julian turned back toward me.
“Mason, why these children? Why now? Why are you willing to spend every dollar you have, and possibly every dollar you will ever earn, on five strangers?”
I opened my mouth, but nothing came out.
I saw Lucas whisper something to the younger children.
His lips formed the same soft, reassuring shape that a mother might use, and my throat closed.
“Please answer the question,” Julian said.
“I…”
“Mason.”
Judge Harrington leaned forward.
When he lowered his hand, the sharper edge of the room seemed to soften with it.
“Julian, sit down for a moment,” the judge said quietly.
Julian blinked, then returned to his seat.
The judge looked directly at me, not at my file.
“Son,” he said, “I have served on this bench for 28 years. I would like to hear the real reason in your own words. Take your time.”
I gripped the edge of the witness stand until my knuckles ached.
Then, I forced myself to speak.
“Twenty years ago,” I began.
The words caught somewhere deep inside me, in a place I could not reach.
I tried again.
“Twenty years ago, in this same courthouse, I sat where those children are sitting now.”
The judge set down his pen.
His eyes moved toward the file beside him and then returned to me.
Something in his expression changed as a slow, quiet recognition settled over his face.
“I was one of five children,” I continued. “Our parents died in a fire.”
I stopped again.
I could feel Victoria watching me, but I made myself continue.
“A judge signed an order that separated us and sent us to homes in three different counties. It happened in this building. It may even have happened in this courtroom. I don’t know.”
My hand remained pressed against the rail.
“My little brother had a red toy truck that he would not let anyone touch. It was made of plastic, and one wheel was missing. He was holding it when they put him into the second car.”
My voice trembled.
“The door closed on his hand, and someone had to open it again. He was screaming my name through the back window. I was nine years old. I ran after the car until I fell.”
The judge had not moved.
“I never saw him again, Your Honor. I have sent letters, searched records, and paid people to help me find my siblings. After 20 years, there are still two of them I have not found.”
Julian slowly lowered his notepad to the table.
“When I saw those five faces on the emergency placement registry,” I said, “something inside me broke open. I made a promise that another family would not be torn apart if I had the power to stand in the way.”
Julian sat down without asking another question.
The judge looked toward the back of the courtroom.
“Lucas, would you come forward, please?”
The boy walked carefully to the front, still clutching his sister’s pink ribbon.
“Son,” the judge said gently, “tell me what you want.”
Lucas looked at his brothers and sisters before answering.
“I just want us to stay together, sir.”
The judge remained silent for a long moment.
He removed his glasses, rubbed the bridge of his nose, and glanced toward Patricia.
“Ms. Patricia,” he said quietly, “based on what you’ve observed over the past three weeks, do you believe this placement deserves a chance?”
The courtroom turned toward her.
Patricia lowered her clipboard.
“When I first reviewed Mason’s application, I had serious concerns,” she admitted. “Five children are a tremendous responsibility for anyone.”
She looked at me, then at the children.
“But I have watched these children with him every day since the emergency placement began. They run to him when they’re frightened. They listen to him. They’re finally beginning to sleep peacefully. Most importantly, they are still together.”
She paused and faced the judge.
“After everything I’ve observed, I believe keeping these children together in Mason’s care is in their best interest. Separating them now would cause them further harm.”
The judge nodded once.
“The state’s request to place these children in separate foster homes is denied.”
No one in the courtroom moved.
“Given the emergency circumstances, the court grants Mason temporary custody, effective immediately, subject to continued supervision, a successful home inspection, and completion of the remaining licensing requirements.”
He looked directly at me.
“I will personally oversee this case until permanent placement is finalized.”
For a heartbeat, the room was completely silent.
Then, I heard a small gasp.
Mia broke free from the court aide’s hand and ran straight toward me.
I dropped to one knee just as she threw her arms around my neck.
“We’re going home?” she whispered.
My throat tightened.
“Yeah, sweetheart,” I managed to say. “We’re going home.”
The twins wrapped themselves around my shoulders a second later, and even Lucas, who had tried so hard to be brave, finally let the tears come.
“I told them you’d keep trying,” he said, wiping at his face. “I told them.”
“You helped me keep that promise,” I whispered.
When I looked up, Patricia was standing beside us.
She handed me the temporary custody paperwork.
“Take good care of them,” she said softly.
“I will.”
“I know.”
As we walked out of the courtroom, Victoria rested a hand on my shoulder.
“You did all the hard work,” she said. “I just helped the court hear it.”
Outside, the afternoon sun felt warmer than I remembered.
One by one, I buckled each child into a car seat.
This time, nobody asked where they were going.

The drive home was almost silent.
Mia fell asleep before we reached the first stoplight, her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her chin.
The twins leaned against each other in the back seat, and for the first time since I’d met them, they weren’t holding on because they were afraid. They were simply tired.
Lucas looked at me in the rearview mirror.
“We’re really staying together?” he asked.
I smiled.
“Yeah, buddy. We are.”
He nodded once and looked back out the window.
That was the first time I saw him smile.
“I kept my promise,” I whispered to the brother I had not seen in 20 years.
