The following morning, Daniel called eighteen times.
I ignored every call.
By afternoon, Evelyn discovered that her monthly allowance had disappeared.
Suddenly, they wanted to talk.
At my attorney’s office, Daniel arrived with his mother, both demanding that I leave the marriage with nothing.
My lawyer, Arthur Hale, calmly presented the financial records.
Bank transfers.
Property deeds.
Business loans.
Evidence showing that nearly everything they considered theirs actually belonged to me.
Daniel turned pale when he discovered the truth about the mansion.
“You own our house?”
“I always have.”
Then Arthur revealed something else: security footage clearly showing Daniel assaulting me.
For the first time, my husband looked frightened.
“Emily, please. I made a mistake.”
I touched my bruised cheek.
“No, Daniel. You made a choice.”
Just then, my phone vibrated.
An anonymous message appeared.
DON’T TRUST YOUR LAWYER.
Attached was a photograph of Arthur secretly meeting Evelyn outside my mansion two weeks earlier.
I looked across the conference table.
Evelyn was smiling again.
She believed she had outsmarted me.
But what she didn’t know was that I had already discovered Arthur’s betrayal.
For weeks, my real attorney, Ms. Vance, had been gathering evidence that Evelyn and Arthur were conspiring to seize my assets using forged documents.
I turned toward Arthur.
“How much did Evelyn pay you to betray me?”
His face went white.
Evelyn immediately snapped, “Enough to make sure my son gets everything!”
I smiled.
