But the figure labeled ‘GRANDMA’ had been violently, aggressively crossed out with a thick, bleeding blue permanent marker. It looked like someone had tried to stab the paper repeatedly.
And next to the scribbled-out figure, written in sharp, elegant, unmistakably adult calligraphy—the exact same handwriting from the note that arrived with the fishing line—was one word.

He stood up, holding the fake purple suitcase by the handle. He walked over to a large, decorative brass wastebasket positioned near the church entrance, meant for discarded ceremony programs.
Without a second glance, he dropped the suitcase inside. It hit the bottom with a hollow, satisfying thud.
He closed the pocketknife with a snap and handed it back to Dave. Then, he finally turned his attention back to Barbara.
