Ryan began to cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Claire\u2019s face did not soften.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI believed you were selfish. I believed you were weak. But I never believed you were cruel enough to abandon your own child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He could barely look at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan remembered his mother\u2019s bright smile, the champagne, the music, and her hand squeezing his shoulder as she said, \u201cTonight is about family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A military police officer stepped inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
