After Six Years Working Abroad, I Came Home to Surprise My Mom in the $600K House I Bought Her

Part 4: Khloe

Khloe stood in the hallway. Her eyes swollen. She’d been crying all night.

She said, Can I see Mom?

I didn’t let her in. I stepped outside. Closed the door.

Khloe said Julian was released last night. Charged with forgery and fraud. He had a court date next month.

She said, He’s staying with his brother. He won’t answer my calls.

She said, The bank called me. The loan is in my name. Because the deed was in my name.

She said, If the deed is voided, the bank will come after me. For a hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

She said, I’ll lose everything. I’ll go to jail too.

Then she started talking fast.

She said, Please. Don’t let them void the deed. Just let it stay in my name. I’ll put it back in yours. Quietly. Next year.

She said, We’ll pay off the loan. Somehow. Nobody has to know.

Then she said the thing she came to say.

I’m your sister, Natalie. Mom would want you to protect me.

I felt that one land. It was meant to.

Because Mom would want that. She always protected Khloe.

I took a slow breath.

Khloe, I said quietly, I’m not going to let a forged deed stand. On my house.

She stared at me.

I’m not going to lie to a judge, I said. Or a bank. For Julian. Or for you.

Khloe’s face crumpled.

But I’ll tell the detective you didn’t know about the forgery, I said gently. If that’s true.

And I’ll help you find a lawyer. A good one.

Khloe started sobbing.

Then the hotel room door opened behind me.

Mom stood there. In a robe. Leaning on a cane. Her knees wrapped.

She looked at Khloe for a long time.

Then she said, very quietly, Khloe. Did you know about the deed?

Khloe didn’t answer.

Mom said, Khloe. Look at me.

Khloe looked up.

She whispered, I knew, Mom. I signed the papers at the notary.

He told me it was the only way.

Part 5: The Patio

My mother didn’t say anything for a long time.

Then she said, quietly, Thank you for telling the truth.

She said, Now go tell the detective.

Khloe nodded. She was shaking. She walked down the hallway.

She gave a full statement that afternoon. About the deed. The notary. The loan. Julian’s gambling.

The district attorney charged Julian with forgery, mortgage fraud, and financial exploitation of an elderly person.

He pleaded guilty. Four years.

Khloe cooperated. The prosecutor gave her a plea deal. Probation. Restitution. Community service.

The court voided the forged deed. The bank voided the loan. They pursued Julian for the money.

Khloe and Julian moved out on the third day. They never contested the notice.

Khloe filed for divorce in the spring.

She moved into a small apartment. She works at a bank now. Answering phones.

Every month, she sends Mom two hundred dollars. From her paycheck. Mom tried to refuse. Khloe insisted.

Mom moved back into the master bedroom. The big one. With the bay window.

I hired a housekeeper. Twice a week. Mom argued. I told her she’d spent thirty years cleaning up after other people. She was done.

I didn’t go back to Dubai. I found a job in Austin. I moved into the guest suite.

Mom and I eat breakfast together every morning. On the patio.

Last month, Khloe came for Sunday dinner. The first time in six months.

She sat at the table. She didn’t say much.

After dinner, she went out to the patio. She knelt down. She started scrubbing the grill.

Mom walked out. She stood over her.

She said, Khloe. What are you doing?

Khloe said, quietly, You knelt here for two years. Because of me.

I wanted to know what it felt like.

Mom looked at her daughter for a long time.

Then she took the brush out of Khloe’s hand. She tossed it into the yard. The same way I did.

She held out her hand.

She said, Get up, sweetheart.

Nobody in this family kneels on this patio again.

Khloe took her mother’s hand.

She stood up.

And the three of us sat down together. At the table on the patio.

As a family.
