My ex-husband’s comments were never cruel enough to justify ruining a birthday or holiday, which was exactly why I kept swallowing them. At our daughter’s wedding, she finally addressed the pattern in a way none of us saw coming.

“He said you resented my career. That you thought I was showing off.”
“I don’t know enough about your career to resent it.”
She gave a small, embarrassed laugh. “I know that now.”
There was a long silence.
Then she said, “I should’ve asked myself why every story about you made him look reasonable and you bitter.”
I didn’t know what to say to that.
So I said nothing.
Greg walked over.
He had a drink in his hand.
“Well,” he said. “That was subtle.”
Vanessa looked at him. “Don’t start.”
He ignored her.
He looked at me. “Happy?”
“About what?”
“Getting your big moment.”
“I didn’t know she was going to say any of that.”
He laughed. “Sure.”
Vanessa said, “Greg.”
He turned toward her. “What?”
“I think you’ve said enough about her.”
Vanessa looked tired.
He stared at her.
