It meant watching Tyler leave the house before sunrise and knowing that whatever happened during the next 24 hours was completely outside my control.
Over time, we found ways to make it work.
We moved anniversaries around.
We celebrated holidays early.
I learned not to take it personally when Tyler came home too exhausted to talk.
He learned that if he missed something important, he needed to make up for it with more than a tired apology.
Most of the time, we managed.
Birthdays were harder.
Tyler always pretended his didn’t matter.
“It’s just another day,” he’d say whenever I tried to make plans.
I knew better.
He wasn’t someone who wanted a huge party or a room full of people singing to him.
He hated being the center of attention.
But he loved small things.
His favorite meal.
A handwritten card.
A cake from the bakery he had been obsessed with since before we met.
He noticed the effort, even when he acted embarrassed by it.
This year, I decided I wasn’t doing the usual routine anymore.
His birthday fell right in the middle of a 24-hour shift, so I planned a surprise instead: I picked up a dozen balloons and a small cake from his favorite bakery, then drove straight to the station during what I knew was their downtime between calls.
I kept the plan to myself.
That was harder than it sounded.
Usually, I told Tyler almost everything.
If I bought him something, I wanted to give it to him immediately.
If I planned something, I nearly ruined it by asking suspicious questions.
This time, I stayed quiet.
That morning, Tyler kissed me goodbye while I was still standing in the kitchen with a mug of coffee in my hand.
“Don’t do anything crazy today,” he said.
I smiled.
“Why would I?”
He narrowed his eyes at me for a second.
That look almost broke me.
Then he laughed, grabbed his bag, and headed out.
“Love you,” he called.
“Love you too.”
The front door shut behind him.
I waited about ten seconds before smiling to myself.
The plan wasn’t complicated. That was what I liked about it.
No giant party. No reservations that might get ruined by an emergency call. No pressure.
Just me showing up.
I’d done this once before, years ago, and the guys had practically thrown a parade.
Tyler had been so embarrassed and so happy at the same time.
Back then, he had only been at the station for a few years.
I still remembered walking in with cupcakes and watching several firefighters immediately start yelling that someone’s “girlfriend” had arrived, even though Tyler and I were already married.
Tyler had turned bright red.
One of the guys had put a paper birthday crown on his head.
Another had taken a picture before Tyler could stop him.
Tyler complained about that picture for months.
He also kept it.
That memory was part of why I felt so good about going this time.
The station had always seemed like Tyler’s second home.
I knew some of the firefighters well enough to recognize their cars.
I knew which guys were loud, which ones were quiet, and which ones could turn anything into a joke.
They had been around for pieces of our life together.
Weddings.
Babies.
Promotions.
Bad calls.
Long nights.
I wasn’t walking into a room full of strangers.
At least, that was what I thought.
I picked up the cake shortly before heading over.
The bakery employee handed me the white box carefully.
“Birthday?”
“My husband’s.”
“Big plans?”
I glanced at the balloons stuffed into the back seat of my car.
“Hopefully.”
She laughed and wished him a happy birthday.
I drove away feeling ridiculously pleased with myself.
The balloons kept drifting into my rearview mirror.
At one stoplight, a silver balloon slid forward and bumped the side of my face.
“You’re going to ruin this before I get there,” I muttered.
I pushed it away and kept driving.
The station wasn’t far.
I’d made the trip enough times that I barely thought about the route.
I passed the grocery store Tyler liked, the gas station where he always bought terrible coffee, and the intersection where I’d once waited nearly 20 minutes because a freight train seemed determined to ruin my afternoon.
Everything felt normal.
That detail would stick with me later.
There was nothing in the drive that warned me.
No strange call.
No message.
No missed notification.
Nothing.
I parked out front, balloons bouncing against the roof of my car, and walked up to the bay doors with the cake balanced carefully in both hands.
I expected someone to notice immediately.
They did.
Just not the way I expected.
Nobody smiled.
That was the first thing I noticed, before I even said a word.
A few of the guys looked up, then looked at each other, then looked away from me entirely, like they were waiting for someone else to speak first.
For a second, I wondered if I’d interrupted something serious.
The station wasn’t loud like I remembered.
No television blaring in the background.
No one calling across the room.
No stupid joke flying in my direction.
The air felt strangely still.
I tightened my fingers around the cake box.
Maybe they’d had a difficult call.
That happened.
Tyler had told me before that sometimes the station stayed quiet afterward. Everyone processed things differently.
I told myself that was all this was.
Then I noticed one firefighter glance at the balloons and immediately lower his eyes.
Another man cleared his throat and walked toward the far side of the bay.
My excitement started slipping.
Not disappearing.
Just changing.
A small nervous feeling began forming in my stomach.
I looked around for Tyler.
I didn’t see him.
Maybe he was in the kitchen.
Maybe he was showering.
Maybe they were planning to mess with me.
That last possibility actually made me feel better.
Tyler’s crew loved making people uncomfortable before revealing a joke.
I almost smiled.

“Is Tyler around?” I asked, still holding the cake, my voice already sounding smaller than I meant it to.
Nobody answered right away.
That silence was worse than anything they could have said.
Then Captain Reyes came out from the back office, slowly, his expression doing something I’d never seen it do before.
I had known Captain Reyes for years.
He was normally composed.
Firm when he needed to be, but easygoing around families.
Whenever I stopped by, he usually greeted me with some version of, “What did Tyler do now?”
Not this time.
He looked at the balloons in my hand, then at my face.
Something inside me went cold.
Captain Reyes stopped a few feet away.
For one strange second, neither of us spoke.
The balloons shifted behind me.
The cake suddenly felt heavier in my hands.
“You don’t know yet?” he asked.
For a second, I thought I’d misheard him.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Captain Reyes’ expression changed immediately.
He looked past me toward the other firefighters, almost as if he wished one of them would step in and rescue him from the conversation.
Nobody did.
My heart started pounding.
“Know what?”
Captain Reyes lowered his voice.
“Amanda, why don’t you put the cake down?”
That sentence terrified me more than his question had.
“No.”
“Amanda.”
“Where is Tyler?”
My fingers tightened around the cardboard box.
Captain Reyes took one careful step toward me.
“He’s not here.”
“I can see that.”
My voice came out sharper than I intended.
“Where is he?”
One of the balloons slipped from my wrist and floated toward the ceiling.
Nobody moved to grab it.
Captain Reyes rubbed a hand across his jaw.
“There was an incident this morning.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“What kind of incident?”
“He was on a call.”
I stared at him.
Tyler had been on hundreds of calls.
He’d come home with bruises before.
Once, he’d needed stitches in his forearm.
Another time, he’d spent two days complaining about his ribs after part of a ceiling came down near him.
He always told me afterward.
Usually much later.
“What happened?”
Captain Reyes hesitated.
That hesitation made my knees weak.
“Is he alive?”
His eyes widened.
“Yes. Amanda, yes. He’s alive.”
I finally breathed.
It wasn’t relief exactly.
It was enough air to keep me standing.
“Then tell me where my husband is.”
Captain Reyes pulled a chair away from the table.
I ignored it.
“He was taken to St. Matthew’s.”
My stomach dropped.
“Why?”
“He got hurt.”
The cake nearly slipped from my hands.
A firefighter named Grant rushed forward and caught the edge of the box before it hit the floor.
“I’ve got it,” he said quietly.
I let him take it.
My hands were shaking so badly that I couldn’t have held it much longer anyway.
“How badly?” I asked.
Captain Reyes looked directly at me.
“He was conscious when they transported him.”
That wasn’t an answer.
“How badly?”
“There was a warehouse fire this morning. Part of the interior structure gave way.”
My mouth went dry.
Captain Reyes continued carefully.
“Tyler and two others were inside. They got everyone out, but Tyler took the worst of the impact.”
I pressed one hand against my chest.
“He called me this morning.”
“I know.”
“He sounded fine.”
“That was before the call.”
The room blurred for a second.
I remembered Tyler standing in our kitchen.
“Don’t do anything crazy today.”
His smile.
His bag over his shoulder.
“Love you.”
Those had been completely ordinary words.
Suddenly, they felt unbearably important.
“Why didn’t anyone call me?”
Captain Reyes’s face tightened.
“We tried.”
“No, you didn’t.”
“Amanda, we did.”
I grabbed my phone from my purse.
No missed calls.
No messages.
Nothing.
I held it up.
“There’s nothing here.”
Grant looked uncomfortable.
Captain Reyes frowned.
“What number do we have for you?”
I recited it.
He went still halfway through.
Then he looked toward the office.
“That’s not the number on Tyler’s emergency contact form.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
He repeated the last four digits.
They belonged to my old number.
The one I’d changed almost two years earlier.
For one ridiculous moment, I wanted to laugh.
Of all the paperwork Tyler remembered to complete, he had apparently forgotten the form that mattered most.
“You’re kidding.”
“I wish I were.”
I looked toward the doors.
“I need to go.”
Captain Reyes nodded.
“I’ll drive you.”
“No. I can drive.”
“You’re shaking.”
“I said I can drive.”
My voice cracked on the last word.
That ended the argument.
Grant placed the cake on the table.
The balloons were still tied around my wrist.
I stared at them.
Bright blue.
Silver.
Red.
“Happy Birthday” was printed across several of them.
They looked obscene now.
I untied them and left them beside the cake.
Captain Reyes handed me my keys.
“He’s in good hands.”
I nodded, though I barely heard him.
The drive to St. Matthew’s felt twice as long as the drive to the station.
Every red light seemed personal.
Every slow car made me angry.
I kept gripping the steering wheel and repeating the same thought.

At the hospital, I practically ran through the emergency entrance.
The receptionist checked Tyler’s name and directed me upstairs.
I found him in a private room.
He was awake.
The moment I saw him, my legs almost gave out.
His left arm was strapped against his body.
There was a bandage near his hairline, and dark bruising had already started forming along one side of his face.
But he was there.
Tyler looked at me and managed a crooked smile.
“Hey.”
I stopped beside the bed.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Then anger arrived right behind relief.
“You idiot.”
His smile faded.
“Fair.”
“You absolute idiot.”
“I know.”
I leaned down and kissed his forehead carefully.
Then I started crying.
Tyler reached for my hand with his good arm.
“I’m okay.”
“No, you’re not.”
“I will be.”
That was different.
I could accept that.
I sat beside him and held his hand.
He had a fractured shoulder, three cracked ribs, and a concussion.
The doctors wanted to keep him overnight for observation.
It could have been so much worse.
I knew that.
So did he.
After a while, Tyler glanced at me.
“How did you even know I was here?”
I wiped my face.
“I went to the station.”
His eyes closed.
“Oh no.”
“With balloons.”
He groaned.
“And cake.”
“Amanda.”
“Your favorite one.”
He gave a weak laugh, then immediately winced because of his ribs.
“Don’t make me laugh.”
“You don’t deserve cake.”
“That’s cruel.”
I squeezed his fingers.
Then I remembered Captain Reyes’s first words.
“You don’t know yet?”
Something about them still bothered me.
“Tyler.”
He looked at me.
“Why did Captain Reyes act like there was something else I should know?”
His expression changed.
There it was.
Not fear.
Guilt.
I sat straighter.
“What?”
Tyler stared at our joined hands.
“The warehouse wasn’t empty.”
“I know. Reyes said you got everyone out.”
“Not everyone.”
I felt cold again.
Tyler swallowed.
“There was a little girl trapped upstairs.”
I said nothing.
“The floor was already unstable. Reyes ordered everyone out.”
My chest tightened.
“Tyler.”
“I heard her crying.”
He looked at me then.
“I went back.”
I stared at him.
He had disobeyed an evacuation order.
He had walked back into a collapsing building.
For a child he didn’t know.
“Did you get her?”
Tyler’s eyes filled.
“Yeah.”
I covered my mouth.
“She’s okay?”
“Not a scratch.”
The anger inside me broke apart.
I wanted to yell at him.
I wanted to hold him.
I wanted to tell him never to do anything like that again, even though we both knew he probably would.
Then Tyler squeezed my hand.
“That’s not what Reyes thought you knew.”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
He took a slow breath.
“The department nominated me for the Medal of Valor today.”
I stared at him.
Tyler gave me the smallest smile.
“And apparently they approved it.”
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then I laughed through my tears.
I had driven to the station thinking I was going to surprise my husband for his birthday.
Instead, Tyler had nearly broken my heart, saved a child’s life, and somehow still looked embarrassed by people making a fuss over him.
I leaned closer.
“You’re still an idiot.”
He smiled.
“Yeah.”
“But I’m proud of you.”
His eyes softened.
“That part I’ll take.”
The next morning, Captain Reyes brought the cake to Tyler’s hospital room.
The entire crew came with him.
So did the balloons.
This time, when they walked through the door, everyone was smiling.
