My daughter-in-law’s name lit up the screen.
“Margaret, thank goodness you answered,” she said.
Her voice was thin and hurried.
“Melissa? Is everything alright?”
“Jason has to travel for work next week, and honestly, I don’t know how I’ll manage. The children keep asking about you. They miss their grandma.”
“THANK GOODNESS YOU ANSWERED,”
My heart lifted at those words.
“They ask about me?”
“All the time,” she said. “Why don’t you come stay with us for the week while Jason’s away? Please. It would mean so much to Lily and Noah.”

Noah tugged at my sleeve and held up a crayon drawing of a tall woman with gray curls and a giant smile.
“THE HOUSE SMELLS SO NICE NOW THAT YOU’RE HERE.”
“That’s you,” he said proudly. “You make the house happy.”
I kissed the top of his head to hide the tears pricking my eyes.

“Nobody asked you to do those things. I’ll need the money before you leave tomorrow.”
For a long moment I could not speak.
I simply folded the invoice into a careful square.
“I don’t have two thousand dollars available,” I finally managed. “Please give me until morning.”
She leaned back in her chair, utterly satisfied, and returned to her phone.

“Melissa… What’s this? Why is there a help wanted sign in my yard?”
I met his eyes.
“Because that’s exactly what your wife invited me here to be.”
“HOW CAN PAYMENT BE NEGATIVE?”
His brow furrowed. “I don’t understand.”
“You will,” I said quietly. “Just give me a minute.”
Melissa rushed toward the sign, forcing out a brittle laugh.
“It’s a joke, Jason. Your mother has a strange sense of humor. Help me pull this up.”
I stepped forward.
“It isn’t a joke, sweetheart. Let me show you what my week looked like.”
“IT’S A JOKE, JASON. YOUR MOTHER HAS A STRANGE SENSE OF HUMOR.”
I handed him the invoice Melissa had placed beside my coffee.
His face fell as he read it.
“You billed my mother two thousand dollars?”
“Money’s been tight,” Melissa said quickly. “I told you I was handling it.”
Jason looked at her, something breaking behind his eyes.
“I asked you to cut back months ago.”
But I wasn’t done yet.

I reached into my cardigan and drew out my own itemized bill.

I looked at Jason.

For the first time that week, it finally felt like I had been invited for the right reason.
