Richie performed at the Forest Park venue on August 29, 2026, delivering songs from his five-decade career. His set included music from his years with the Commodores and hits from his solo career.

The Photos Captured Richie Hours Before His Hospitalization

Footage from his closing number, “All Night Long,” provided a closer look at the final stretch of the show.
Richie had changed into a bright red jacket over an all-black outfit and initially moved around the stage with a microphone in hand. He gestured toward different parts of the crowd and extended his arms as the band played behind him.
Witnesses later told TMZ that Richie appeared to be struggling a bit toward the end of the show. At one point, Richie turned toward the side of the stage and appeared to signal for something.
A crew member soon brought out a black chair and positioned it behind him. Richie remained standing briefly before sitting down and continuing the performance.
Even while seated, he stayed engaged with the number. He sang into his microphone, raised an arm toward the audience, and was later joined closely by two band members playing guitar and bass.
Richie eventually returned to his feet. As the show ended, he could be heard repeatedly wishing the audience good night. He raised his arms toward the crowd, bowed, and then walked offstage.
Hours later, Richie reportedly checked himself into a St. Louis hospital for tests and was admitted to intensive care. Sources with direct knowledge said doctors were looking into possible slight dehydration.

Richie had recently completed his 2026 “Sing a Song All Night Long” co-headlining tour with Earth, Wind & Fire before taking the stage in St. Louis. According to his Instagram post, the tour included stops across the United States and Canada from June 24 to August 14.
His August 29 appearance at The Muny was not part of the tour but a one-night-only concert promoted separately by the St. Louis venue on Facebook.
In the days between the tour and his St. Louis appearance, Richie also remained active on social media. Two days before the concert, he shared a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton, who died at age 80 on August 25. It was his last post on the platform before his hospitalization.
The post featured a photo of Richie and Parton together. He reflected on their time together, referenced her song “I Will Always Love You” and praised the lasting impact of her music.
The St. Louis hospitalization came just over two months after Richie experienced another health scare onstage during the opening night of his summer tour.
What Happened Onstage in St. Paul
Richie was rushed to a hospital after falling ill onstage on Wednesday, June 24, in the middle of his concert at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The moment came during “Dancing on the Ceiling” — a normally high-energy spot in the setlist. He took a seat on one of the stage platforms while still trying to sing.

Addressing the audience, Richie joked about the situation while acknowledging that it was unlike anything he had experienced before.
“Now, what I have learned about my years of being in the business. When you are feeling busy, sit your [expletive] down. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! And when you are feeling strange about yourself, sit your [expletive] down.”
He continued, “Now, I want you to know that’s the first time in the history of ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ I’ve done it sitting down. That’s a bad sign. That’s a bad sign, y’all.”
Music critic Jon Bream, who was at the concert, later noted in a social media post that Richie, who was feeling “dizzy” and “strange,” performed “Dancing on the Ceiling” sitting down during opening night at Grand Casino Arena.
The Show Came to an Abrupt End
Richie’s saxophonist, Dino Soldo, then stepped in with an announcement.
“Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well. He won’t be able to continue with the show, and additional information will be available. Thank you for your patience and your understanding. It’s been amazing. Safe travels home, everyone. Thank you. Thank you so much.”
According to TMZ, paramedics met Richie backstage shortly afterward. Sources connected to the singer told the outlet he was transported by ambulance to a hospital, though the trip was described as a precautionary measure.
At the time, his condition remained unclear.

In a post shared by Live Nation Chicago, Richie’s team said doctors had advised him to rest and recover fully. As a result, his June 26 show in Chicago and June 27 concert in Columbus, Ohio, were postponed.
Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire were expected to return to the stage on June 30 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Live Nation post also added that Lionel was “heartbroken” to postpone the two shows and “cannot wait to be back performing for his fans.”
The statement said new dates would be announced later. The United Center in Chicago also addressed the postponement on Facebook, noting that the decision had been made “Under advisement by doctors.”
Richie Once Thought He Might Lose His Voice Forever
The St. Paul health scare also recalled an earlier difficult period in Richie’s career. During the 1990s, he developed a mysterious illness that affected his vocal cords and underwent four separate surgeries before doctors determined that diet-induced acid reflux was causing the problem.
In an interview with People, Richie later described the experience as “about as close as you ever would’ve come to a nervous breakdown” because he feared he might never sing again. “You don’t want anybody fooling around down there. This is your identity,” he said, adding, “I never really thought that it would end.”
